- X payment services was already planned as early as April 2023.
- The feature is expected to launch in the U.S initially.
- As of the end of 2024, X Payments has money transmitter licenses in 39 jurisdictions, lacking 11 states to launch fully in the U.S.
Moving closer to the “everything” app, Elon Musk’s teased X payment services could come to light this year as the platform’s CEO, Linda Yaccarino, confirmed it was one of the priorities for 2025, introducing X Money.
Details remain scarce on whether the payment service will accept crypto or how it will be integrated with the platform.
As Yaccarino mentioned, another major focus for this year will be X TV. Since it has already launched a streaming app, the upcoming X TV could either improve its abilities or produce actual original content.
The X Money Journey
In April 2023, Elon Musk, who then recently acquired Twitter, changing it to X, already stated his plans to turn it into an everything app, including payments. CEO Yaccarino echoed this in July of that year, saying X was the future of “unlimited interactivity,” which included payments or banking.
Musk further voiced the idea on December 21, 2023, in an X Space with ARK Invest’s Cathie Wood. He initially expected the feature to be fully launched in mid-2024, but at the time, several money transmitter license applications were still pending approval.
In mid-2024, Yaccarino talked about X Payments, saying it would first launch in the U.S., aiming to redefine what a social app could be capable of.
As of the end of 2024, X Payments LLC secured money transmitter licenses in 39 jurisdictions.
With only 11 states remaining, including Delaware, Hawaii, Washington, and New York, X is positioned to fully launch its X Money services across the U.S. once the necessary licenses are obtained.
