Sam Altman just announced OpenAI’s GPT-4o and with added abilities, more industries could be affected.

One of the major arguments against the use of artificial intelligence is that it’ll displace jobs in multiple fields. While GPT-4 has already had a significant impact on specifically creative-related jobs, GPT-4o could have an even greater impact on other industries as well.

Here are some of the industries expected to be affected by the new AI.

Customer Service Industry

As of 2022 alone, there were approximately 3 million customer service representatives in the US per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Outside of the United States, the Philippines and India could be the two most affected countries due to its major local BPO industry.

As of 2023, the BPO in the Philippines employ around 1.7 million full-time workers (not counting part-time and under-contract workers) while India reportedly employed over 5.4 million people that year.

Translation Industry

The global translation industry rose to a $56.18bn in 2021, with Europe being the largest service market in the world taking up a 49% share. North America takes a 39.41% share.

While initial forecasts were positive, a seen on My Language Connect, the impact of the new AI tool could disrupt this.

Although minimal studies exist on the number of translators, there are articles stating that there were an estimated 640,000 translators worldwide from somewhere around 2019 to 2022.

Tutorial Industry

While a significant chunk of tutors also works as teachers, tutoring usually provide these individuals with a sizeable additional income. Fortune Business Insights note that the global private tutoring market size was valued at $57.92 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach $62.08 billion in 2024.

While no studies or data show the number of teachers affected, there would be millions of students that would benefit from GPT-4o’s ability to tutor students.

While there could be many other industries impacted by the new model’s abilities, these three could be directly affected when the AI’s abilities become more accessible to others. Translation, for example, could be more efficiently done through OpenAI’s ChatGPT subscription instead of other premium apps which costs the same.
