‘Dame Time’ NFT collection by NBA player Damian Lillard still hasn’t had a single offer
NBA basketball player Damian Lillard recently scored 35 points for the Milwaukee Bucks’ Game 1 against the Indiana Pacers. Despite this, his NFT collection has still failed to gain traction, with no offers since its announcement on April 10, 2021.
The project launched on OpenSea and was in partnership with The Sandbox and Grow Your Base. In its trailer, it highlighted the following features:
- Adidas Dame 7 Shoes
- Blake Jamieson Artwork
- Exclusive Party
- Signed Swag
So far, the project launched 11 NFTs on OpenSea but received zero offers.
Dame is one of the few NBA players to launch individual projects, here are some examples.
- Stephen Curry previously planning to launch his own “Curryverse” but somehow didn’t push through.
- LeBron James, on the other hand, focused on education, partnering with Crypto.com for web3 focused educational support.
- Kevin Durant joined Coinbase to promote the crypto exchange’s advertising content.
The NBA has had its fair share of involvement in NFTs and crypto both in a good and bad way. In Feb, 2024, it faced a lawsuit over its marketing deal with Voyager Digital and was accused of negligence in promoting unregistered securities leading to over $4.2 bn in losses.
Interestingly, a judge ruled that emojis counted as legal advice and have consequences in a previous Dapper Labs filing, citing the NBA Top Shot account on Twitter using emojis to indicate financial returns. A New York federal judge also ruled that NBA Top Shot NFTs may be considered securities.
The NBA has also had sour partnerships in the past, like with FTX’s Sam Bankman-Fried’s partnership with Miami Heat. The latter also terminated its arena-naming relationship with FTX, dismantling the “FTX Arena” sign from its stadium.
Other figures in the NBA, like Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, also lost money in crypto with Cuban falling victim to a hack resulting in the loss of $870k in various crypto.
